Summer Nursing Internships Abroad: 2027 Planning Guide

Summer Nursing Internships Abroad: 2027 Planning Guide

Summer nursing internships abroad are supervised hospital placements that nursing students complete during the long break between academic years, usually from June to August. They are not jobs: you join a ward team as a visiting student and work within your training level. With travel4med, summer nursing internships abroad run in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bali and Zanzibar, with prices from 1,490 EUR.

Researched and editorially reviewed by Nils-Andre Stritt, travel4med. The section on what student nurses do on the ward was reviewed by MUDr. Amandeep Grewal, a doctor on the travel4med team.

Key Takeaways

  • The weather decides more than you think. From June to August, Denpasar in Bali averages 14 rain days and Zanzibar 16, against 39 in Colombo and 62 in Kathmandu (WMO climate normals).
  • Summer places go first. In 2023/24, 39.4% of US students who studied abroad for academic credit went in the summer term (Open Doors 2025).
  • Your school sets the rules. Length, credit and what you may do on the ward come from your own nursing programme, not from the host hospital.
  • Book in the autumn or winter before. Our Bali page asks medical students to apply at least 3 months ahead and to send complete documents within 2 weeks of booking.
  • Prices start at 1,490 EUR. That is the starting price in Pokhara, Nepal; Galle, Zanzibar and Bali follow at 1,499, 1,640 and 1,720 EUR.

What are summer nursing internships abroad?

A summer nursing internship abroad is a block of supervised clinical practice in a foreign hospital that you fit into your summer break. Schools and providers call it many things: nursing placement, clinical placement, elective or simply internship. Whatever the label, three things stay the same. A qualified nurse or doctor supervises you. You do only what your training level allows. And your own school decides whether it counts.

Summer nursing internships abroad are popular for a simple reason: for most students it's the only time of year without lectures or compulsory placements at home. That's also why they fill up early.

New to the idea? Our nursing internship abroad planning guide covers clinical hours, immunisations and recognition in general. This guide focuses on the summer itself: where to go, how long to stay and when to book.

Why do nursing students go abroad in the summer?

Most nursing programmes pack the academic year with lectures, skills labs and home placements, so the long break is the natural window. The numbers show how strongly summer dominates. Open Doors, the annual census of the Institute of International Education, counted 298,180 US students abroad for academic credit in 2023/24. Of them, 117,373 (39.4%) went during the summer term, and 17,396 (5.8%) studied health professions.

Those are US figures across all fields, but the pattern is familiar wherever you study. A summer placement also gives you something a home placement can't: a look at nursing where staff are scarce. The World Health Organization counts 29.8 million nurses worldwide in 2023 and a global shortage of 5.8 million. WHO expects about 70% of the remaining shortage in 2030 to sit in its African and Eastern Mediterranean Regions. On a summer ward in Zanzibar, you'll see what that means for a team.

Which destination suits a June to August placement?

If you study in the northern hemisphere, your summer is June to August, and the four destinations behave very differently in those months. The most reliable data are the official climate normals that national weather services publish through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). They're long-term averages, not forecasts.

Here is the same data month by month, with the typical daytime high in July:

Bali (Denpasar)6 / 4 / 430.4 °CDry season, the easiest summer choice
Zanzibar (Zanzibar)5 / 5 / 628.6 °CDry season after the long rains
Sri Lanka (Colombo)16 / 12 / 1130.0 °CSouth west monsoon, showers are part of daily life
Nepal (Kathmandu)17 / 23 / 2227.7 °CMonsoon peak, wet and green

A note on the stations. Our placements are in Galle, Pokhara and Bangli, which have no WMO normals of their own, so the table uses the nearest published city. Treat it as the pattern, not a forecast for your hospital.

Does rain rule a destination out? No. Hospitals don't close for the monsoon, and a wet Pokhara summer is still a full clinical experience. It does change your free days, your travel and your mosquito protection, so read our dengue guide for Sri Lanka if you pick the south west coast in summer. For the full year, including the southern-hemisphere break, see our guide to the best time for a medical elective abroad.

Studying in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa? Your long break falls in December to February, and the picture flips: Denpasar averages 27 rain days in January, Kathmandu just 2.

How long should a summer nursing placement be?

As long as your school requires, and as long as your break allows. Many nursing programmes set a minimum number of weeks or clinical hours for a placement to count, and the numbers differ from school to school and country to country. Ask your placement office before you pick dates, not after.

For most students, summer nursing internships abroad last four to eight weeks. Four weeks is enough to settle into one ward and see the routine. Six to eight weeks lets you rotate, take on more under supervision and travel a little at the end. Our Sri Lanka and Zanzibar pages say programmes start every Monday, which makes it easy to fit your weeks around exams and home placements.

Want to see what four weeks look like in practice? Read Batu's report from a 4-week nursing internship in Sri Lanka.

What do student nurses do on the ward?

You do what your training level and your school allow, always under supervision. In practice, that usually means basic care, vital signs, ward rounds, wound care you've already learned at home, and a lot of watching how a team works with fewer hands. Our Zanzibar page describes students joining doctors on rounds and examinations and, depending on their training level, the operating theatre.

The hospitals are real public or teaching hospitals, not clinics for visitors:

  • Galle, Sri Lanka: the National Hospital Galle, formerly Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, the second largest hospital in southern Sri Lanka.
  • Pokhara, Nepal: Manipal Pokhara Teaching Hospital, an academic teaching hospital at the foot of the Himalayas.
  • Bangli, Bali: RSU Bangli Hospital, an academic teaching hospital affiliated with Udayana University.
  • Zanzibar, Tanzania: Lumumba Regional Hospital.

One rule matters more than any other on summer nursing internships abroad: never act beyond your competence because a ward is busy. It protects patients, and it protects you. Language is the other everyday challenge, and our guide to language barriers on a clinical internship abroad shows how students handle it. Each destination has its own nursing guide: nursing in Bali, nursing placement in Nepal and nursing placement in Zanzibar.

When should you book for summer 2027?

Book in the autumn or winter before your summer. That's now, if you're aiming for summer 2027. Summer weeks are the first to go, and the paperwork takes longer than most students expect.

Our Bali destination page sets the clearest rule: medical students apply at least 3 months in advance, and complete documents are due within 2 weeks of booking. Bali also needs an internship visa that a local sponsor applies for, which our guide to nursing in Bali explains. Sri Lanka and Nepal have their own entry rules for placements, covered in our visa guide for Sri Lanka and Nepal. Add school approval and vaccines on top, and three to six months of lead time is realistic for summer nursing internships abroad.

Vaccines need time too. Some come as a series of doses weeks apart, so see a travel clinic early. Our guide to vaccinations for a medical elective abroad explains the timing.

What does a summer nursing internship cost?

Our nursing placement page lists these starting prices, read on 27 October 2026:

DestinationStarting price
Pokhara, Nepalfrom 1,490 EUR
Galle, Sri Lankafrom 1,499 EUR
Zanzibar, Tanzaniafrom 1,640 EUR
Bali, Indonesiafrom 1,720 EUR

We quote in euros, so your own currency will differ, and the final price depends on how many weeks you stay. Our destination pages list accommodation and three meals a day in the package; flights, your entry permit, vaccines and insurance are extra. Our budget guide for a clinical placement abroad helps you add it all up, and our guide to elective bursaries shows where students look for grants. For insurance that covers clinical work, read our medical elective insurance guide.

Studying in Austria? Our sister site explains what the new FH-GuK-AV 2026 changes for nursing placements abroad in German, written for Austrian nursing bachelor students. Medical students in Germany who need the compulsory nursing placement before their first exam will find the German version of our offer on the travel4med.de nursing placement page.

Planning your summer placement step by step

Summer nursing internships abroad come together in a few months if you go in this order:

  1. Ask your school first. Find out whether the placement counts, the minimum weeks or hours, and which forms need a signature.
  2. Fix your summer window. Block the weeks between your last exam and the next term, and leave a few days to recover at the end.
  3. Pick a destination for the season. For a dry June to August, look at Bali or Zanzibar; for a monsoon experience, Sri Lanka or Nepal.
  4. Book a free consultation. We confirm the hospital, the ward and the exact price for your dates.
  5. Send your documents on time. For Bali that means within 2 weeks of booking, and the visa process starts soon after.
  6. Sort your health and insurance. See a travel clinic early and get insurance that covers clinical work.
  7. Set your learning goals. Write down three to five things you want to practise and share them with your supervisor in week one.
